This Week In Wall Street History Mar 10-16

Located in the heart of New York’s financial community at Broadway and Wall Street, the historic Episcopal parish of Trinity Church welcomed worshipers this week on March 13th, 1698.

Serving as a safe spiritual harbor for area workers and residents, the first Trinity Church building was founded by charter of King William III of England. Its current Gothic Revival structure, designed by Richard Upjohn (1846) was opened to minister to downtown Manhattan’s wealthy and disadvantaged populace alike, including African Americans and waves of successive immigrants. In addition, it’s St. Paul’s Chapel at Broadway and Fulton hosted a Thanksgiving dinner for George Washington after his inauguration, and is the oldest public building in continuous use in New York City.

In recent times, the 18th century structure of St. Paul’s emerged unscathed from the 9/11 attacks that destroyed the World Trade Center located across the street. Functioning as a relief center for rescue and recovery efforts, as well as a beacon of hope during that trying time period…St. Paul’s and Trinity Church continue to minister to parishioners and engage in many philanthropic endeavors, as well as offer Wall Streeters classic noonday concerts and performances.
