CEO Makeover : Dress for Success Fashion guru Tim Gunn powers up Intel CEO Paul Ottelini By: Cristina VelocciPremiere Issue , Page 22 Perception “I’ll admit to being confounded by the fashion semiology of the technology industry. The clothing we wear sends a message about how we want to be perceived. CEOs in this industry are saying, ‘I’m a nerd. Genuflect to my brain.’ ” Shirt “I’m fine with the open shirt, and I like the color. Just make certain to wear a V-neck T-shirt with open-neck dress shirts, because there are few things that bring a wardrobe down faster than a peeking T-shirt. It’s underwear. Don’t let it show.” Appropriateness “Paul’s outfit is too casual for the occasion [a company forum]. I understand the desire to appear accessible and approachable, but Paul can be those things and still make it clear that he’s leading Intel, not merely working there.” Proportion “Paul’s shirt and pants look a little oversized. This is the most frequent fashion foible in our nation — most people’s clothes are too big. Clothes that fit well say, ‘I’m commanding my wardrobe.’ And if Paul were to fix his posture and stand a little more erect, his body language would say, ‘And I possess total confidence in who I am.’ ”
Shoes
“Is that a kiltie loafer on his feet? These work only on
the golf course.”
Jacket “The easiest way to make this look more appropriate for the occasion is to add a suit jacket. Simple. Easy.” Color “Switch out the shirt for a lighter one, for a sharper contrast with the dark suit.” Pocket Square “I love a pocket square in the breast pocket of a suit jacket or blazer, because it adds a touch of ‘fashion’ to the overall look. There are three distinct options to the appearance: casual abandon; a crisp square with about three-quarters of an inch of fabric protruding; or a series of carefully aligned peaks. I prefer either of the first two choices, because I find the third option to be too fussy and contrived.” Overall Fit “To really improve the fit, I’d tailor the pants — and probably the jacket, too.”
Shoes
“Add a shoe without
ornamentation — a loafer, an oxford or even an ankle boot. Black would be best.”
